Program Overview

The Department of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University strives to provide a world-class program of research and coursework for pursuit of graduate degrees in chemistry. The MS program is designed to equip students with a strong foundation for a career in chemistry, areas allied with chemistry, and chemical management. To accomplish this mission, the department offers lecture and laboratory courses, seminars, and research experience (i.e., academic/industry internships).

Program Requirements

The Master of Science in Chemistry requires a minimum of 30 credit hours. Of these, a minimum of 18 credit hours must be formal coursework in Chemistry at the 400- and 500-levels; however, with prior consultation and approval of the faculty advisor for the program, up to 6 credit hours of Chemistry coursework at the 300-level may be applied toward this requirement.

In addition, students must complete 3 credit hours of research (CHEM 601) or literature research (CHEM 507 and CHEM 508) , and two semesters of CHEM 605 Chemistry Colloquium Series , including attendance and participation. The remaining 9 credit hours required to complete the program may be fulfilled through approved elective coursework in Chemistry or related disciplines, as determined in consultation with the faculty advisor.

Students who need to maintain full-time status in their final semester of the MS in Chemistry program should register for EXAM 600. If a student does not need to maintain full-time status, it is not required. This is most helpful for international students who must maintain full-time status for visa purposes and have only a few credits remaining to complete. It is strongly recommended that this option be utilized only in the final semester, as it may only be used once.
