Program Overview

The Department of Sociology offers graduate training leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. The doctoral program includes four areas of concentration: Sociology of Age and the Life Course, Medical Sociology, Social Inequality, and Research Methods.

Program Requirements

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is awarded upon the completion of required coursework, comprehensive examinations and all requirements of the School of Graduate Studies, including the timely completion and successful defense of the doctoral dissertation.

The PhD in Sociology requires the completion of 66 credit hours beyond the BA/BS degree, including 18 credit hours of SOCI 701.

Successful completion of written comprehensive examinations in two of the four concentration areas (Sociology of Age and the Life Course, Medical Sociology, Social Inequality, Research Methods) are required before beginning work on the dissertation.
