Program Overview

This dual degree program allows students to prepare students for careers as patent agents working in the area of biotechnology. The MA in Patent Practice prepares students for the patent bar exam with in-depth courses. The MS in Biochemistry provides a solid foundation in cutting-edge biological science and biotechnology, along with an introduction to the biotechnology industry. The dual degree program allows students to finish the dual degree in three or four semesters, earning a total of 46 credit hours, instead of the 66 credit hours that would be required for two separate degrees.  

The dual degree program draws on the strengths of School of Law and the Department of Biochemistry in the School of Medicine. As a result, students are immersed in the vibrant learning environment of both degree programs.  

Program Requirements

This dual degree program is a companion to the JD/MS in Biochemistry. This program takes advantage of the Law School program, the MA in Patent Practice. As part of an effort to add a competitive advantage to students pursuing a career in patent law, the dual degree program adds additional scientific principles to the student's background to better prepare them for the cutting edge challenges of medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and bioinformatics in the coming years. Students take courses in Biochemistry following a program that is similar to the JD/MS degree. Although the dual degree can be completed in two years, most students will choose the 18-month option that earns both degrees in less time and at a reduced cost.
